Chapter 18

“Jessica! I’m so sorry. I completely forgot to call you back yesterday. I went for a run in the afternoon to wake myself up after a nap, so I missed your call. Then Rudi came over for dinner and I just lost track of—”

“Alara! You’re rambling. It’s okay. Don’t worry about it.”

“Sorry, I think I had too much coffee.” I glanced down at my third cup of coffee and decided to set it aside. For now.

It was early Thursday morning. I felt guilty for not working on either case last night, but my brain was so overwhelmed. Irene had been right. I needed a break.

I had slept so deeply the previous afternoon that I was completely disoriented when I finally woke up to Pretzel kicking me in the face. If he hadn’t, I might have slept straight through the night. I had forced myself out on a quick run around the neighborhood. It had been too long since I’d pounded the pavement. I didn’t usually run at night, but I ran right toward the sunset, taking in the paintbrush views and soaking up the gorgeous fall weather. It felt weird to run without Blueberry, but he was still recovering from his tail trauma.

Rudi came over after and other than a quick review of both cases, we focused on making fajitas and snuggling up with the boys while watching one of Rudi’s favorite movies, The Wedding Planner. That’s right, The Wedding Planner with Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey. He won’t tell me why he likes it so much, but I’m pretty sure it has to do with a young Jennifer Lopez and all the tight clothing she wears in the movie.

I felt refreshed. Better than I’d felt in days. And I was ready to get back to investigating.

“No worries. I’m highly caffeinated myself. Hang on a second.” I heard the phone shift, then her muffled voice as she said to someone else, “Is that him? Oh, no. Just some other random white guy.” The phone shifted again and she came back crystal clear. “Alara? Sorry, I’m back. I have an update for you.”

“Where are you?” I asked.

She laughed. “I never thought I’d say these words, but Kiana and I are on a stakeout. Let me fill you in.”

Apparently, I’d missed quite a bit. Late Wednesday afternoon, two shady-looking guys came into PPHS to try to adopt three pitbulls at once, including Billy. Sweet, lovable Billy. They’d asked some startling questions that disturbed the adoption counselor. Typically, adopters are happy to adopt dogs without bite histories, but these two fellows had seemed disappointed that the three dogs they picked had clean records.

The adoption counselor had asked the men to wait while she sneaked to the back to ask management what to do. Kiana had overheard and called Jessica to the office to listen in. The director of the shelter herself had gone out to tell the men she couldn’t allow them to adopt. No way was she letting them take Billy. The two had become quite nasty at that point, calling her a name best reserved for female dogs.
